Google Earth

Technology Description:

Google Earth lets you fly anywhere on Earth to view satellite imagery, maps, terrain, 3D buildings, from galaxies in outer space to the canyons of the ocean. You can explore rich geographical content, create interactive learning experiences, save your creations and toured places, and share with others.

Implementation:

Using GPS coordinates, the attack locations for the USS Arizona and USS West Virginia were marked using custom placemarks.  Using HTML, the description boxes for each ship were populated with a Library of Congress primary source, a link to the bibliographic record for the source, a table with basic ship information and a final link citing the information.  

An image overlay depicting the japanese attack routes was then resized to fit directly over the Pearl Harbor area and the overlay opacity was decreased to show the relationship between the overlay and modern geographic features.

Wordle

Technology Description:

(From www.wordle.net)"Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends"

Implementation:

Wordle was used to visually compare text taken from accounts of the Pearl Harbor survivors from both the USS Arizona and the USS West Virginia. Three accounts of survivors from each ship were found on various websites.  The text of these accounts was cut and paste and combined into a MSWord document, and then the resulting text was copied into the input field in the Wordle web application.  Two Wordle images were created: one for the USS Arizona and one for the USS West Virginia.  The resulting images were visually arranged, and then saved into the Wordle gallery so that they could be view by others.   The last step was to create a link to the image from within the class wiki.  This was done by simply copying the code provided by the Wordle application and pasting it into the wiki page.
